Hospital Lift Upgrade comprising: Replacement of Lift Machine, Safety Gear, Overspeed Governor, Tension Weight Pulley, Governor Rope, and Load Ropes.

Introduction

Omni Lift Services Ltd was commissioned to upgrade the three-floor goods/passenger lift. The project aimed to enhance the lift's performance, safety, and reliability to meet the hospital's high operational standards.

Background

The Hospital, (a key healthcare facility), relies heavily on its lifts for the efficient movement of patients, staff, and equipment. Lift No. 2 had been experiencing performance issues due to outdated machinery and components. The client sought a comprehensive solution to replace the aging equipment and improve the lift's overall functionality.

Challenges

  • Minimising Downtime: As a busy hospital, any lift downtime could disrupt daily operations.
  • Complex Installation: The replacement of the machine and safety components required meticulous planning and execution.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensuring all new installations met the latest safety regulations and standards.

Solution

Omni Lift Services Ltd provided a turnkey solution that encompassed the removal of old machine and installation of a new machine. Key steps included:

Machine Replacement and Re-Roping

  1. Site Preparation: Conducted site inductions, placed necessary notices and barriers, and ensured the correct positioning of the lift. Electrical isolations were performed with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  2. Dismantling Old Machinery: Removed the existing machine components, including the brake, sheave, gearbox, and motor. The old equipment was transported off-site for disposal.
  3. Installation of New Machine: Utilised lifting beams and an engine hoist to transport and install the new machine onto the existing bedplate raft, following the manufacturer's instructions for alignment and securing.
  4. Wiring and Guarding: Ran new brake, machine, and encoder wiring to the control panel and drive. Supplied and fitted full guarding to the lift machine and overspeed governor for enhanced safety.
  5. Rope Replacement: Removed existing lift ropes and replaced them with new load ropes, anchors, clips, and springs to guarantee traction and reduce rope slip.

Safety Gear Upgrade

  1. Safety Gear Installation: Removed the old safety gear and installed new bi-directional safety gear, ensuring correct alignment and adherence to manufacturer specifications.
  2. Overspeed Governor Replacement: Installed a new overspeed governor and tension weight pulley, checking for correct alignment and operation, including the slack rope switch functionality.
  3. Testing and Validation: Performed comprehensive checks to ensure all components were correctly aligned and functioning. Assisted Orona, the equipment supplier, with testing all installed parts.

Results

  • Enhanced Performance: The new machine and components significantly improved the lift's reliability and efficiency.
  • Increased Safety: Upgraded safety gear and overspeed governor brought the lift up to current safety standards.
  • Minimal Disruption: Careful planning and execution ensured that the hospital's operations were not adversely affected during the project.

Conclusion

Omni Lift Services Ltd successfully modernised Lift No. 2, delivering a safer and more efficient lift system. The project was completed on time and within budget, showcasing our commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.
